More about David's Kart collection |
And so it began...
At the age of fourteen David Marshall Coulthard started out in competitive racing. Although David didn't need much encouragement his father, Duncan, and mother, Joyce, always gave him the support and guidance during these early days.
This would often mean driving David across the UK for the various events he competed in and ensuring he was back in time for school on Monday.

Rowrah Circuit 1986, Round 2 of the Superone series, effectively karting's Formula 1. Weather: Very Wet Track : awash. David, starting from pole, was overtaken on the first corner. Fighting back he lost control and spun the kart to a halt. The engine died because a class one racing kart has no clutch, simply a direct chain drive from a sprocket on the engine to another sprocket on the rear axle. To start a stalled kart single-handed, you place one hand, usually the right, on the top of the steering wheel, lift the rear of the kart (the kart weighs around 150 lbs) with the left hand, then run for 10 yards or so while crouched over and carrying the rear. Finally, when you have picked up enough speed you drop the rear end of the kart and, in one fluid motion, jump into the driver's seat and operate the throttle hoping to start a high revving engine from impossibly low revs. For a fit adult, on an empty track on a dry day, restarting on your own is something to be specially proud of. Coulthard, a 15-year-old on a crowded track in the pouring rain, restarted his kart and set off to catch the pack, now half a lap ahead. He won the race on the last lap, within sight of the flag. |
